La Hoya, like many slums, is a place where people are living in desperate conditions; some without access to a proper bathroom or drinking water. Estela, a single mother of nine, lost her house when her ex-husband refused to continue paying rent. With no where to go, she and her kids have been living at her uncle’s house for 7 months. In June 2009, Un Techo Para Mi Pais came to La Hoya to build homes; Estela was the recipient of one of the houses being built.
